Analysts at J.P. Morgan have suggested that the pricing outcome of the mid year renewals is still very much up in the air, noting that major U.S. losses and an active hurricane forecast are weighing on the market, while strong margins, manageable LA wildfire impacts, and ample capital, particularly at the top end of reinsurance programmes, are helping to offset the pressure.

""In a recent report, J.P. Morgan analysts described year-to-date reinsurance pricing as “disappointing,” noting declines in property catastrophe rates at both the January 1 and April 1 renewals.

“The January renewals reductions came after both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton impacted the US in the autumn of 2024, but both showed that the industry was still able to produce strong results with a ‘normal’ year of loss experience,” the analysts explained.

J.P. Morgan continued, “The Japanese renewals again saw reductions that were slightly larger than our expectations. However, looking at loss experience in the region, it has been somewhat limited since 2018/19 aside from the 1 January 2024 earthquake that cost the industry $2-3 billion.”

With this in mind, the analysts observed that the mid year renewals are more focused on the US market with the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season in June.

“The US has seen a material level of loss already this year from the LA wildfires, which on a standalone basis is one of the costliest insured losses of all time. Looking to the remainder of the year, Atlantic hurricane activity could make or break the reinsurers’ year, with Q1 having already likely breached catastrophe loss budgets for the reinsurers,” J.P. Morgan said.

The Atlantic hurricane season is reportedly expected to be above normal, according to Colorado State University.

Commenting on what this means for pricing, J.P. Morgan, noted, “At this stage, we would say that the outcome of the mid year renewals is still very much up in the air. There have been major losses in the US and hurricane season is expected to be active again.

“On the other hand, margins are still strong, the LA wildfires were manageable for all participants on the reinsurance side and there is plenty of capital, particularly at the top end of reinsurance programmes.”
