Markel International has announced the appointment of Sam Batstone as an Underwriter within its newly launched Construction & Engineering practice.
Launched in November 2025, Markel’s Construction & Engineering practice within its international division introduces Construction All Risks (CAR) and Erection All Risks (EAR) solutions for clients worldwide, aimed at supporting a broad range of project needs while strengthening Markel’s position across construction and energy markets.
In his new role, Batstone will help shape Markel’s Construction & Engineering portfolio. He will focus on building a strong book of business, developing broker relationships, and driving collaboration across the company’s global network to deliver profitable growth.
Batstone brings deep technical underwriting expertise, joining Markel from AXIS, where he served as Underwriter – Construction – Global Markets.
Prior to that, he spent 11 years at Canopius Group, most recently as Underwriter – Heavy Industry & Engineering, contributing directly to syndicate profitability through underwriting international CAR/EAR risks in the Lloyd’s market.
